Gone But Not Forgotten: Musicians We Lost in 2024.
It’s incredibly difficult to say goodbye to talented creators whose beautiful works have brightened our lives. While no one can live forever, the music they created will continue to be cherished by future generations.
The music world faced a tough start in 2024 with the passing of David Soul on January 4. Best known for his role as Det. Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson on the iconic 1970s series *Starsky and Hutch*, Soul was also a gifted musician, achieving three Billboard Hot 100 hits, including the No. 1 song “Don’t Give Up on Us” in 1977, and releasing two albums that made the Billboard 200.
On January 14, Grammy-winning artist Jo-El Sonnier passed away at age 77 while on tour, suffering cardiac arrest after a show in Texas. Just days later, the world mourned the loss of Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group The Shangri-Las, who died at 75.
The music community was further shaken by the death of Toby Keith, who passed away on February 5, just a day after the 2024 Grammys. The country star had shared with fans in 2022 that he was battling stomach cancer.
As friends and loved ones grieve these incredible artists, their contributions will not be forgotten by fans around the globe. Below, Billboard pays tribute to the musicians we lost in 2024.
