Chappell Roan Reveals Severe Depression Diagnosis During Midwest Princess Tour

Roan, previously diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, didn’t think she had depression. Here’s why.

The singer-songwriter of “Good Luck, Babe!” and recent MTV VMA Best New Artist winner, Chappell Roan, shared with The Guardian that she is currently in therapy twice a week while on her Midwest Princess Tour. As of September 21, she’s performing in London, followed by a stop in Berlin on September 23, before returning to the U.S. for several concerts, starting with the All Things Go Festival in New York City on September 28.

“I visited a psychiatrist last week because I felt confused about my emotions,” Roan revealed in a profile published on Saturday.

“She diagnosed me with severe depression — which surprised me since I don’t feel sad,” she explained. “But I exhibit all the symptoms of someone who is severely depressed.”

Her symptoms include brain fog, forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, and a lackluster perspective on life.

“I believe it’s due to the changes in my life,” she noted. “Everything I used to enjoy now feels complicated. For example, if I want to go thrifting, I need to arrange for security and mentally prepare for the fact that it won’t be a normal experience. Going to the park, doing Pilates, or yoga — I have to think about how to do these things safely, without the risk of being stalked or harassed.”

Later in the interview, she expressed, “Every time I walk through my front door, it just overwhelms me… I can’t help but start crying, feeling either angry at myself for choosing this path or mourning the loss of the curiosity and pure wonder I once had for the world.”
