It’s been three years since the near-fatal car accident that claimed the life of one of Victony’s close friends. The Afropop sensation carries the burden of that traumatic crash with him every day.

Since the wreck in April 2021, Victony’s perspective on life has been forever altered. He had to relearn how to walk following intensive surgery and physical therapy.

Music has always been a constant for Victony – born Anthony Victory – and he channeled his resilience into his creative process while crafting “Stubborn,” his debut LP, which hit streaming services on Friday (June 21).

“It represents overcoming adversity and transforming life’s ‘lemons’ into powerful art,” Victony says about his new album. “I hope that when people listen to the album, they feel a sense of shared experience and inspiration to find strength and hope in their own journeys.”

Victony brings a versatile squad of collaborators into the fold, some of whom are dipping their toes into the Afrobeats scene for the first time. Teezo Touchdown, Saint JHN, Asake, Shallipoppi, and Shorae are among the special guests on “Stubborn.”

Teezo and Victony take listeners to the dancefloor with the disco-tinged “Slow Down,” a standout track showcasing his versatility. “We vibed instantly, and the session was full of experimentation,” the Nigerian artist says of working with Teezo. “We wanted to create something that made people move, but also felt profound.”
